Following Franklin: A Northwest Passage Journey with Ron Holland

Ron Holland superyacht designer – crossed the oceans on small racing yachts before evolving to larger more comfortable vessels. He was very aware of the Northwest Passage and was keen to follow in the footsteps of the explorers who crossed oceans under sail and explored previously unknown territory. Having been inspired by the “St. Roch” the second ship to successfully cross the top of Canada in 1942 by way of the Northwest Passage, following Amundsen’s “Goja”, the first European ship to make the transit in 1903.

The owner of the yacht “Rosehearty” a 56 metre Perini Navi – Ron Holland Design ketch, who also shares a passion for the Northwest Passage planned to return to the Arctic for a second attempt to transit the Northwest Passage, he invited her designer to join him. Ron said YES.

While the glaciers melt due to climate change, the navigable waters of the Arctic are still unpredictable and often blocked by drifting ice. This second effort by “Rosehearty” to navigate the Northwest Passage provided three weeks of cruising in August, a time when the ice has normally receded and there is the possibility of an open channel to navigate. We would soon learn; the channel is not predictable but one that requires a watch for continual change as the ice is moved along currents and pushed by the wind. “Rosehearty” was blocked and could not complete her transit through the Northwest Passage on the second attempt.

Follow Ron Holland’s adventure in the Northwest Passage with photos and stories from the August 2019 voyage.
