ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Ron Holland was born in New Zealand in 1947 and began racing dinghies at Torbay Sailing Club at the age of eight. He completed his first ocean crossing, from Auckland to Sydney before he turned 16. In 1973 he won the Quarter Ton Cup in England in his first IOR design, “Eygthene“. He established his Design Studio in Kinsale, Ireland in 1974, earning a successful reputation during the following decade with his ocean racing designs, winning every major international IOR regatta and Ton Cup event. In 1985 he designed “Whirlwind XII“, his first Sailing yacht over 100 ft in length. This was followed with a string of award winning designs that include several design collaborations with Perini Navi, the first being the largest aluminium sailing yacht at the time, “Felicita West” at 64 m. This was followed by the 75 m “Mirabella V“, the largest composite single-mast yacht in the world when launched in 2003. He has also designed Whitbread Round the World Race yachts, and collaborated with Bruce Farr and Laurie Davidson in New Zealand’s first America’s Cup challenge in 1987 in Perth when they designed the ‘Plastic Fantastic’ yachts, such as “KZ7” which almost won the Challenger Series. Recently he has given lectures at The University of Auckland in the Masters Course on Yacht Engineering. For several years his Design Studio has been located at Granville Island, Vancouver, Canada
